Post Medieval: Candlestick |
||
Description |
English: Cast lead alloy fragment, probably the cup from a candle stick holder of post medieval date 1550 – 1750. The candlestick must have been composite and this represents one part of it. It is irregular due to abrasion and movement in the ploughsoil; broadly in plan it is circular and cross section it is U shaped. The internal socket is cylindrical and slightly tapered from rim – base. The base of the socket has a single pierced hole (diameter 3mm). The outer edge of the socket also has a pronounced circumferential ridge near the base. The outer edge and rim is decorated with a series of incised designs; around the rim these consist of radiating lines, around the upper edge these are echoed with converging lines. The decoration is not present on all of the outer surfaces and this may be due to laminating abrasion. The artefact is a mid grey cream colour with a poorly preserved patina, in places the metal is a dark grey black colour and this maybe due to the decorative design. A direct parallel in lead alloy has not been found.
The artefact measures 45.8mm diameter at top, 22.6mm diameter at base, stands 34.5mm high and weighs 82.41 grams. The internal socket measures 23.6mm diameter and is 27.1mm deep. |
