Title |
Post Medieval Buckle Chape |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper alloy buckle chape / strap end union from a two part buckle of later post-medieval date (1600 - 1720). The chape is formed from a single sub-rectangular cast copper alloy sheet. This sheet has been cut and folded around an iron (due to the orange staining from iron corrosion) axis bar to form both the pin of the buckle and the hinge to attach the pin to the buckle. The rear of this sheet has been cut to form a tapering and expanding design, with a rounded terminal. Through this terminal a single cast copper alloy rivet is passed to secure the buckle to a leather strap. The pin and strap union measures 24.1mm long, 11.4mm wide and is 4.9mm thick and weighs 1.9 grams. Similar examples to this buckle can be seen in Ross Whitehead's book 'Buckles 1250 - 1800', page 96: Whitehead suggests that these buckles date from 1640 - 1720 and that they may have been used on either shoes or breeches. |
