Post Medieval Buckle Chape |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy post-Medieval Georgian stock buckle with chape dating to 1720-1790 AD. The buckle frame is incomplete but was rectangular in plan with rounded corners, sub-oval in section and has a separately drilled frame for the spindle. the spindle is still in situ as is an elaborate openwork attachment chape. the chape is decorated with an openwork heart and additional scroll detail and has three circular attachment studs, on the opposite side are three spike-like tongues. Traces of white metal coating, perhaps tinning or silvering remain on the surface. Such buckles are understood to have fastened at the neck of clothing. |
