Title
Post Medieval Silver Bodkin
Description
English: TREASURE ITEM 2012 T960:

Complete but bent and broken silver bodkin (head-dress pin). The overall shape of the bodkin is an elongated rectangle in plan and sub-rectangular in section, with slightly convex sides, and slightly rounded tips. The terminals of the bodkin are identical with each one having a lengthways rectangular slot 12.6mm long by 1mm wide. Above each of these slots, through the tip of each terminal there is a single circular perforation (eye) measuring approximately 1mm in diameter and set slightly off-centre. The initials MW are incised, on one face of the bodkin, approximately midway along the shaft between the two terminals; on the opposite face in roughly the same location is an unclear punched mark, possibly the letter M (raised) within a recessed heart or oval; the bodkin is otherwise undecorated. This bodkin has been dated, in line with similar examples to the seventeenth century, c.1600-1700.
