Title
Post Medieval Spur Buckle.
Description
English: Incomplete cast copper alloy buckle with an integral plate. A spur buckle of probable seventeenth century date (AD 1600 – AD 1700). Length 33.5mm, maximum width 14.3mm and maximum thickness 2.4mm. Weight 2.54g. The buckle is slightly convex at the front and flat at the rear. It has an oval loop which is 12.5mm in length and has a maximum width of 14.3mm. The loop has an expanded outside edge with no indication for a pin rest. The incomplete integral plate is 21mm in length and is 10mm in width at its juncture with the loop. The plate tapers from the loop towards an old break where it is 5mm in width. There are two circular holes in the plate. One hole, for the missing pin, is 2.2mm in diameter. It is situated on the longitudinal centre-line, adjacent to a transverse rib that divides the loop from the plate. The other hole, to accommodate a rivet, is 1.9mm in diameter. It is situated slightly off-centre, and 3.4mm distance from the pin hole. The rivet is missing. Midway along the length of the plate is an indistinct transverse groove. Both faces are rough and have traces of a dark green patina. The piece is in fair condition.
