Post Medieval Syringe |
||
Description |
English: Probable Post Medieval lead-alloy (pewter) syringe. The syringe is cylindrical with a conical nib and screw top lid with a hole for the plunger, the handle is missing but the shaft is still present. The central body of the syringe is decorated on opposite sides with a raised pattern of five connected lozenges with a pair of copiled terminals at the end nearest the plunger. Each lozenge contains a single raised quatrefoil flower motif. The open angles between each of the lozenges contain a single raised fleur-de-lys motif with five along each side. The linear casting seams of the syringe are visible along tboth sides between these two decoarated faces with one seam being more prominent than the other. The screw top lid also has these casting seams, but these are not aligned with those on the main body of the syringe. The lid has a decoration of two pairs of raised stars located on opposite sides.
The syringe is broadly dated as Post Medieval,, c.1600-1800. Dimensions: 74.1mm length (excluding plunger); 18.8mm length of conical nib, 12.7mm main diameter; 15.7mm lid diameter; 30.5g weight. See SUR-B62B22 for a link to an article on an 18thC example found in a shipwreck and thought to be linked to the irrigation of a bladder in venereal disease - syringes, however, as is the case today, may have been employed for a multitude of medical and also non-medical purposes. |
