Title
Post Medieval bodkin
Description
English: Treasure item: 2011 T439; subsequently disclaimed and returned to finder.

Specialist report: An incomplete and bent Post Medieval silver alloy head-dress pin of bodkin type, c. 1600-1700 AD. The fragment consists of the upper part of the pin, the end of which tapers to a curved blunt point. The cross-section of the pin is rectangular. Close to the end is a circular perforation below which there is a rectangular slot or eye. The break has occurred across the rectangular eye. From the top of the eye to the end of the pin, and on both sides, there is a central groove, but other than this the bodkin is plain and undecorated. The fractured ends do show some trace of green copper corrosion product but the centre still looks to be silver in colour. It is concluded therefore, albeit tentatively, that the pin is not silver plated but is made of heavily copper-debased silver. Bodkins of this type were used as hair pins to decorate the hair and the circular perforations were typically used to suspend drop pearls from silver wires to make them more ornate.

Measurements: 15.5 mm long, 3.9 mm wide, 1.6 mm thick; weight: 0.5 grams.
