Title
Post Medieval buckle chape
Description
English: Post medieval cast copper alloy stud chape from a shoe buckle. The chape has two cylindrical tubes at one end with the remains of a tube from the pin between them, around these is the rusted remains of the seperate iron spindle which would have gone through the tubes and into the buckle frame at either side. The body of the chape is flat and narrows immediately after the tubes before curving slightly out and then inwards to a narrower rectangular projection at the end opposite the tubes. This now ends in an old break but would have has a stud to attach to the leather shoe. The chape is stamped with the letters IA above V surrounded by pellets within a triangular or heart shaped recess. It is now 25.1mm long, 19.8mm wide and 3.6mm thick; it weighs 4.40 grams.

Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar stud chape with the a different makers mark on page 98, No.609, which is dated from c.1660-1720. NMS-C85825 is also stamped IA but the form of the stamp is different and it is likely to be from a different maker.
