Post Medieval button |

Description |
English: Post Medieval cast copper alloy military button. The front is very slightly convex and the back concave. The button is moulded on the front with a design of a crown above a circular belt on which is the legend: PRO ARIS ET FOCIS, in the centre of the circle made by the belt are initials or numbers, now unclear. The back is plain with no makers mark and an integral circular loop in the centre. There are traces of gilding on the front and back. It is 15.4mm in diameter and 5.9mm thick including the loop, 1.2mm excluding and weighs 1.64 grams.
Pro Aris et Focis translates as 'for our altars and hearths' or, more loosely, 'for our god and home' a latin motto used by many military units. The design of the button is similar to that used by militias pre 1855 ie Squire (1972) plate 7 no.13, 14, 19 and 30 and the form is also sugegstive of a later 18th to earlier 19th century date. It is possibly a button from the Uxbridge Yeomary Cavelry who used this motto c.1797-1803 and 1830 to 1856. This suggestion would fit with the chin-strap scale from a lancers cap found nearby (<a href="http://database/artefacts/record/id/454787">SOM-6F7563</a>). |
