Title |
Post Medieval clay pipe stem fragments (plan). |
||
Description |
English: 172 clay pipe stems. The stems are both sub-circular in section with a central hole running the length of the stem. The stems are made from moulded fine white clay. Pushing a wire rod through the stem while it is still in the mould creates the hole in the centre. All the stem fragments taper slightly, but measure differently in diameter and length. The stems weigh 350g.
Clay pipes were made in England from the mid 17th to the early 20th century. To date more precisely clay pipes the pipe bowl or any decoration is need. As there are no diagnostic features on these stems, they are given this broad dating range. |
