Title |
Post Medieval fob seal (profile, front face, profile and base). |
||
Description |
English: Post-Medieval (19th century) fob seal. The gold (or possibly more likely gold-coated) fob seal is in the form of a standing owl, with an integral loop protruding from the top of the head. The owl stands on a thick rectangular platform which has rounded corners. The platform is trapezoidal in cross-section, and the sides are decorated with a moulded floral design. The underside has a gem or glass setting which is a dark green with red spotted inclusions. The setting is engraved with initials, an ornate A D. The surface of the seal matrix is shiny with areas of wear, but the base is slightly abraded and shows some of the gold has flaked suggesting it is gilded rather than solid gold. The fob seal measures 21.04mm long, 13.86mm wide, 11.75mm thick, and weighs 4.6g.
The style of the fob seal suggests a 19th century date. A similar example was sold at Bonhams and dated to this period (<a href="http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/17295/lot/179/">http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/17295/lot/179/</a>). As it is less than 300 years old it cannot be considered as Treasure under the Treasure Act 1996. |
