Title
Post Medieval pipe tamper
Description
English: A worn fragment of a cast copper alloy pipe tamper dating to the Post Medieval (18th Century) period. The fragment consists of a figure holding a long thin object transverse across the body with an animal or beast at its feet. It is remarkably similar to ESS-FE21B0, and several other examples, on this database, which are more complete tampers, therefore this example is likely to deptict Saint George, standing upon a dragon, slaying with a spear. The shaft of the tamper starts to extend from below the dragons body, circular in section, but is broken close to the dragon. The fragment measures 52.41mm long, has a maximum width of 23.76mm and is 4.64mm in thickness. It weighs 16.02 grams. The tamper is dull red-brown in colour and the surface is worn.
