Post Medieval to Modern: Gaming piece, King Chess Piece |
||
Description |
English: A complete copper alloy Gaming Piece, probably the King chess piece, of the Post Medieval to Modern period, dating from AD 1700 - AD 1950.
The piece is rectangular in plan and circular in cross section. The front is decorated with the carving of a crowned bearded face facing. This consists of a sloping top culminating in a collar with engraved vertical lines with another collar below, this forms the crown. Below the crown there is a slightly curved forehead with two lozenge shaped ridges forming the eyes, these are below a raised curved ridge which forms the eyebrow. The nose consists of a chevron shaped veritcal sub triangular ridge with two semi circular cut outs for the nostrils. Below this is a moustache which consists of two sub chevron shaped sections sloping diagonally from the nose, these are incised with diagonal lines denoting hair. Below the moustache is a small D shaped raised section making the mouth with a chevron shaped section below with incised vertical curved lines denoting a full beard, the beard protrudes slightly from the main body. Below the beard is a V shaped section made up of two rectangular sections joined in the centre, these rectangular sections have been split with equally spaced incised lines forming small squares each with a pellet inside. Below this is the foot of the object which consists of a rectangular section above an incised groove and a smaller rectangular foot. The reverse of the object has similar decoration at the top and base however the body consists of incised vertical and chevron shaped curved grooves giving the impression of loosely hung material, the sides of the object are split, half the reverse decoration and half the front, giving the impression the King is wearing a hood. The piece measures 81.7 mm in height and has a diameter of 26.8 mm. The main body of the object has a thickness of 24.9 mm and it weighs 266.0 g. The piece is a mid green in colour and has an uneven surface patina. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil may have resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail. No direct parallel was found for this artefact at the time of recording, the detail and style are suggestive of Post Medieval to Early Modern dating. |
