Title
Post medieval bodkin
Description
English: Fragment of post-medieval bodkin. Tapering from a break across the base of a rectangular slot at one end to a break at the other, and now bent into an S-shape. Rectangular-sectioned with a median arris along each edge, engraved decoration alike on both faces consisting of (from below the slot down) two transverse lines, a flower, two transverse lines, multiple longitudinal lines increasing in length towards the centre, an X formed from four feathered lines which don't meet on one face, and a teardrop-shape. A copper alloy core is revealed at the break at the upper end, and where the surface has cracked at one of the bends, with other cracks across much of the surface. The silver outer layer is very thick and may be sheeting wrapped around a core rather than silvering. Surviving length circa 60mm. Maximum width 5mm, thickness 2mm. Weight 3.7g. 17th century.
