Title
Post medieval figurine: pipe tamper
Description
English: A lead alloy figurine of probably post-medieval date (c.AD 1500-1800).

The figurine is anthropomorphic (human like), and is in the form of a standing female figure in the nude. The head is rounded with incised eyes. The arms are positioned at the sides, resting on the hips. The legs are positioned together. The body of the figure has emphasised breasts and a slightly rounded belly. Below the below the belly and between the hips is a drilled hole measuring 5mmin diameter that is likely intended to represent female genitalia. The reverse is similarly moulded with the back curved slightly at the waist to emphasise the figure's posterior.

Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail. The hole could suggest that this is a figurine of Venus but due to the simplistic style of the artefact, this identification is tentative. This object falls within a range of other bawdy objects, mainly pipe tampers, such as SUR-59B224, https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/634637 which were no doubt used to titillate and amuse.
