Title
Post medieval hawking vervel (front, reverse)
Description
English: A medieval vervel, consisting of a flat circular disc with a large central aperture. On one side is inscribed the word "Prince" with sprigs of foliage, on the other side the word "Edward", again with decorative sprigs of foliage engraved in the remaining space. The inscription and engraving suggest a date in the fifteenth century.

The inscription might be interpreted in two ways. It might be linked to an owner of the name "Edward Prince" or it might refer to a "Prince Edward". The two most likely fifteenth century princes of the name "Edward" are Edward, son of Henry VI, or Edward, son of Edward IV, later Edward V.

The vervel is silver and dates from the fifteenth century.

Dimensions: external diameter 18 mm, internal diameter 9 mm.
