Title |
Post medieval meddalion |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete post-medieval biface oval medallion with small parts of the edge missing. Both faces carry images skillfully modelled in high relief. On one within a billeted frame two bearded men maul a naked woman. In the background are the towers of a townscape and in the foreground a dog. This is a depiction of the Old Testament story of Susanna and the Elders. On the other side within a similar frame a woman sitting on a canopied bed pulls on a cloth hanging over the shoulder of a man who turns his head back towards her. In the background a tree and buildings can be seen through a window in an ashlar-faced wall. The floor below the bed is tiled. Height 47.5mm. Width 41.5mm. Thickness 5.4mm.
The Susanna and the Elders composition is identical to that shown on a 20th-century electrotype copy of a medallion of 1580 (www.harvardartmuseums.org). 17th century. |
