Title
Post medieval pipe tamper
Description
English: An incomplete post-medieval lead alloy anthropomorphic pipe tamper dating to c. 1680-1750.

Only the upper plaque of the pipe tamper survives. It depicts a nude male and female figure engaging in standing sexual intercourse, posed beneath a tree branch. The female figure's leg is lifted to expose penetration to the viewer. B It is flat on the reverse. Both figures appear to have long hair which is tied back in distinct styles.

It is very similar to WILT-FE9706 and to NCL-739535, both of which survive in much better condition and show the entirety of the scene, with the tree featured more prominently than the branch which survives in this example. Erotic scenes such as this were popular with 18th century pipe tampers, used to press down tobacco, presumably accompanied by ribald comments.

Measurements: 49.18mm length, 28.64mm width, 7.04mm thickness 48.3g.
