Title
Post medieval silver 'bodkin' hair pin
Description
English: Post Medieval silver head-dress pin of a type known as bodkin, dating to the 17th century. 111mm in length, 6mm wide and 1.5mm thick, with a weight of 5.24grams.

The object is complete and has a flattened hexagonal section which tapers to a slight rounded point at its base. It has a decorated terminal with a rectangular section, consisiting of a transverse band of two incised lines which sit below two semi-circular recesses, one at each side, forming a waisted section. Above this is a further incised line enclosing the central decoration. This consists of a rectangular hole flanked on each side by a row of diagonal incisions. This hole may have been used for threading ribbon onto the pin. Above this the object has a further incised band below a circular plate with a small hole in its centre. This terminates in a sub- trefoil knop.

Margeson (1993:8) writes that these have previously been called 'bodkins' which is a term generally assumed to relate to needlework. The term applies both to needlework and to head-dress or hair pins. The above type of pin was used as head-dress ornaments in the Low Countries in the first quarter of the 17th century. It is thought they were brought to England by immigrants.

The object cannot be considered for Treasure as it was found over 20 years ago.
