My dear Mr Dana. Alas I never knew that you had lost your uncle, who was so well & universally beloved. He looked in such good health 2 years ago that I thought he [??] life to in all for many years yet – I [p. 2] am very much obliged to you for the pamphlets which are all that was wanted to give me an insight into what has been done.
We are in the midst of great uncertainties [p. 3] – but I believe Peace will be maintained for the present – gloomy as the prospects appear.
I wish I cd. get over the Atlantic to breathe yr [??] air – Believe me
