Notes |
Together with 1848,1209. 44-45, 47-57, and 59-89 this print belongs to the 'Augsburger Geschlechterbuch' (Augsburg Book of Nobles) a project undertaken 1545-47 by Hans Burgkmair the Younger and Heinrich Vogtherr the Younger to illustrate the coats-of-arms of the patrician families of the city of Augsburg. A volume containing 44 drawings and 53 prints for the project is in the Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart, and other early prints related to the project are in the Staats-und Staatsbibliothek in Augsburg and the Landesbibliothek in Oldenbourg. The project remained unfinished; Burgkmair and Vogtherr commpleted 88 plates, but the work was not published until 1618, when it was published in three volumes by the Augsburg etcher, Wilhelm Peter Zimmermann, 'Ernewrtes Geschlechter Buch'. Zimmermann added numbers and the names of the families to the plates, and also some etchings of his own with a text and index (see Kaulbach and Zäh 2012, pp236-240, Ausgabe Zi). The designs of some of the prints are derived from Burgkmair the Elder's woodcuts for the Genealogy of Emperor Maximilian I and the Chronicle of Pappenheim (Hollstein 324-415 and 645-723). Literature: H-M Kaulbach and H. Zäh (eds.) ' Das Augsburger Geschlechterbuch, Wappenpracht und Figurenkunst: Ein Kriegsverlust kehrt zurück', exhibition catalogue, Stuttgart, 2012, pp.235-6, Exemplar L and p.104 (for Stuttgart impression of this print without colouring). |

This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
