Title
Probable Medieval: Profile X ray of axehead
Description
English: A complete iron axe or axehead, of probable Medieval dating (AD 1000 to AD 1500).

The axe is broadly sub-rectangular in plan with an irregular shaped expanded blade that has a pronounced downward projection. The socket is sub circular in shape measuring 37.8 mm length x 27.3mm width. The butt of the axe is rectangular. As the blade expands in width it tapers in section; forming a wide even cutting edge.

The axehead measures 160 mm in length, 34.3 mm wide at the butt, 9.3 mm wide at the blade and 122.0 mm thick.

The axehead is a mid orange brown colour and has not been treated. No surface marks or stamps can be seen, these may be lost through corrosion. Elements of the axehead are fragile, especially the socket, which is suffering from laminating corrosion.

A similar style axehead was recorded on the PAS database as HESH-66CF45 and has been identified as being Medieval in dating. It is probable that this axehead is of a similar date.

The axehead was x-rayed by Rachel Altpeter (Conservation Department, Birmingham Museums). The xray shows the remains of the cutting edge, along with the fact that the socket has been made by folding over the ends and hammering together.
