Title
Probable purse mount
Description
English: A copper alloy mount probably from the central boss of a medieval purse. The mount is sub rectangular with rounded corners, and the top edge is damaged. It is decorated with the design of a tau cross on a wrigglework background. It is slightly convex, hollow on the reverse with a roughened surface, probably indicating where it was soldered to the purse boss. It has a length of 29.01mm, width 22.79mm, thickness 1.85mm, weight 3.78g.
A similar example is NMS-FF2D14 on the database which cites the London Museum Medieval Catalogue fig.51 and Plate XXXIV, nos.1 and 2 and an example from North Tuddenham, described as a strap-end, in Norfolk Archeology 44, part i (2000), fig.7 B. The Tau cross is associated with the Order of Hospitallers of St Anthony. Pilgrim badges of the order have been found in 15th century deposits in London, and the purses also date from the late medieval period. The mount has a rich green patina.
