The probe was used to explore wounds and to gain knowledge about the structure of the body. The other end of the instrument could be used to mix medical preparations. It was not unusual for two implements to be combined in this way. This bronze probe and mixer was excavated from the river bed of the Walbrook in the City of London, now an underground river.
