Title |
profile of La Tene brooch |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper alloy incomplete La Tène III bow brooch with long bilateral spring, coiled into 9 to 10 (two missing) loops on a solid rod or chord. The foot and the catch-plate are missing. The length of the brooch is 28.3mm, width of the spring and chord is 20 mm and the thickness of the bow is 5 mm. The brooch weighs 3.53g.
Dr. J.D. Hill comments: "Technically, because of the foot being part of the bow, they should be La Tène III, but these brooches are a distinctly Somerset and Dorset (and further west) type. The dating is not clear. As they are derived from an earlier type, it need not be the case that they start at La Tène III, but slightly earlier. This type is probably dated to the 1st century BC, but perhaps a little earlier. La Tène III, after all, now starts at c.120 BC Hull and Hawkes (1987) illustrates two examples of La Tène III, Type 6 brooches from Meare in Somerset on page 195, Plate S5, Meare 3415 (late in Type 6 series) / Meare 3416, which are dated to the 1st century BC. Sharples (1991) illustrates a similar example on page 155, Fig.130, No.2 (1073), which is referred to as a La Tène II, Type 6 brooch, derived from an earlier Continental type, and is dated to the mid to late 1st century BC. Hattatt (2000) illustrates two La Tène II, Glastonbury type brooches on page 289, Fig.148, Nos.227D & 277, which are dated to the 2nd or 1st century BC. |
