Pvt. Archibald Booker (CP 1181), National Museum of Health and Medicine Description: Private Archibald Booker, Company D, 26th North Carolina Infantry, who received a shell wound to his right leg during the battle of Petersburg, Virginia on October 27th, 1864. The wound became gangrenous and was treated. Attended by Dr. J.C. McKee. Caption reads: “Shell wound of leg. Gangrenous condition of Part. Pvt. Archibald Booker Co. D. 26th N.C.” History is on reverse: “Lincoln General Hospital. Washington, D.C., March 4, 1865. Ward 18, Bed 56,--Name, Archibald Booker, Private, Co. D, 26th Regiment North Carolina Infantry. Admitted to Hospital December 23, 1864, with shell-wound of right leg, removing skin and muscular tissue on anterior and outer surface of middle third of right leg, received in battle below Petersburg, Virginia, October 27, 1864. Gangrene supervened November 12, 1864. Various remedies were applied without effect, but was subdued by Bromine and warm fomentations; after treatment, Liquor Sodae Chlorinatae.
