Pvt. David A. Canfield (CP 1013), National Museum of Health and Medicine Description: Private David A. Canfield, Company D, 4th New York heavy artillery, shows the wound from a gun shot to his neck and spine on March 31st, 1865 at the battle of Petersburg, Virginia. The patient died from his wounds on April 29, 1865. Caption reads: “Gunshot wound of spine. Pvt David A. Canfield Co. D 4th N.Y.H.A.” History is on reverse: “David A. Canfield. David A. Canfield, private, Co. D, 4th N.Y.H.A., aged 27, admitted to Harewood U.S. Gen’l Hospital, April 5, 1865, suffering from gunshot wound; ball entering on left side of neck, passing through the vertebra, producing paralysis of lower extremities, also of left arm and hand. Wounded, March 31, 1865, at the battle of Petersburg, Va. On admission, the condition of injured parts appeared to be tolerably good, but constitutional state of patient was very low; patient entirely unable to move his limbs, and at times unable to retain his urine or feces; remained in this condition, notwithstanding the free use of tonics, stimulants, and a supporting treatment throughout, until April 29, 1865, when he gradually sank and died, on that date, from exhaustion.” Date: circa 1865 Photo ID: CP 1013 Source collection: OHA 75: Contributed Photographs Repository: National Museum of Health and Medicine, Otis Historical Archives Rights: No known restrictions upon publication, physical copy retained by National Museum of Health and Medicine.
