Description: History and image of Private Henry Parquette, Company A, 1st New York Heavy Artillery, who shows the stump of his right leg as the result of an accidental shell explosion at Fort Slocum on September 14th, 1864. The stump became gangrenous but the patient recovered.

Text reads: “Shell wound of thigh. Gangrene. Henry Parquette, private, Co. A, 1st N.Y.H.A., aged 21, admitted to Harewood U.S.A. Gen’l Hospital, September 14, 1864, suffering from gunshot wound right leg, near knee joint, shattering the bones; joint opened, and extensively injuring soft parts. Accidentally wounded by explosion of shell while on duty at Fort Slocum, September 14, 1864. On admission, the constitutional state of patient was very good, although wound was very painful. An amputation being necessary, the limb was removed at the lower third by Teals’ method (quadrilateral flaps;) September 14, 1864; anasth. sulph. aether. The patient reacted promptly, and did very well, parts healing by first intention; but towards the latter part of September, the stump became gangrenous, with considerable sloughing and destruction of surrounding soft parts, and occasional hemorrhage from muscular branches. By the free use of escharotics and dressings of chlorinate of soda, the further progress of the disease was checked, and patient improved rapidly in health; parts granulating finely, and in a fair way of a speedy recovery, when parts became again gangrenous; considerable soft parts of stump lost by sloughing; however, the disease was effectually checked by the free use of nitric acid and bromine, with dressings of ‘oakum’ and chlorinate of soda. The patient was doing very well, and parts had nearly healed, when transferred to U.S.A. Gen’l Hospital, Manchester, N.H., May 17, 1865. Healed June 30, 1865.”
