Pvt. John H. Bagshaw (CP 1007), National Museum of Health and Medicine Description: Private Medad Beck, Company G, 11th Vermont volunteers, shows the result of a gunshot wound to his left sternum and back on April 2nd, 1865, at the battle of Petersburg, Virginia. Patient died of these injuries. Caption reads: “Penetrating gunshot wound of chest. Pvt. Medad Beck, Co G. 11th Vt.” History is on reverse: “Medad Beck. Gunshot wound of side. Paracentesis thoracis. Death from exhaustion. Medad Beck, private, Co. G, 11th Vt. Vols., aged 46, was admitted to Harewood U.S.A. Gen’l Hospital, April 12th, 1865, suffering from gunshot of thorax, left side, ball entering at fourth rib about two inches from sternum perforating right lung and passing out just below inferior angle of scapula. Wounded, April 2nd, 1865, at the battle of Petersburgh, Va. On admission, the injured parts were in tolerably good condition, the patient however suffering from dyspence, extensive emphysema of surrounding cellular tissues, anxious expression of countenance and symptoms of pneumothorax.—Chest freely opened by posterior incision and a large amount of sanious pus removed. Result unfavorable. Treat: supporting. Patient died, April 17th, 1865, from exhaustion.
