History is on reverse: “Private John Trombley. Resection of humerus. Recovery. Private John Trombley, Co. H, 1st Michigan Vols., wounded at the battle of the Wilderness, May 4th, 1864, admitted to Harewood U.S.A. General Hospital May 26th, 1864, with resection of the head and about five inches of the shaft of left humerus, which was performed on the field. When admitted, the patient was in good health and granulations were forming. The wound healed rapidly and in a short time ceased discharging. Before leaving the hospital the limb could be moved with considerable freedom, and by the application of an artificial contrivance, fixing the muscles, a very useful arm would result. The treatment consisted of simple dressings and nourishing diet. Discharged from the service Nov. 15th 1864.” Date: circa 1864 Photo ID: CP 1087 Source collection: OHA 75: Contributed Photographs Related Material: SP 122 Repository: National Museum of Health and Medicine, Otis Historical Archives Rights: No known restrictions upon publication, physical copy retained by National Museum of Health and Medicine.
