Italiano: MASCHERA A CASCO SOWEI - Acconciatura a cupola, ripartita in sei diversi campi da treccine. Volto con fronte bombata, occhi a quarto di luna, piccolo naso e bocca posta sul profilo del mento. Collo costituito da una serie di pieghe sovrapposte che raffigurano rotoli di grasso.
Solitamente l'uso della maschera in Africa è una prerogativa maschile. Presso diverse poplazioni della Liberia e della Sierra Leone (Vai, Gola e Mende) esistono però maschere legate a società iniziatiche femminili (bundu o sande) che preparano le donne alla vita adulta. Le maschere sowei esprimono l'ideale della bellezza femminile: i tratti sottili del viso, la pelle resa lucida dall'olio, i rotolini di grasso del collo, l'elaborata acconciatura, sono tutti segni di buona saluta e agiata condizione sociale. I capelli si legano simbolicamente alla vegetazione e alla fertilità, così che bella è una testa che ha tanti capelli, folti come un campo di riso intensamente coltivato. Una testa ben pettinata essendo il risultato di un lavoro che richiede l'intervento di un'altra persona, è anche segno della stretta collaborazione che esiste fra le donne. Al contrario una testa in disordine mostra l'allentarsi dei legami sociali, come accade nel periodo del lutto o quando si è colpiti dalla follia. Le maschere rappesentano nel contempo la fondatrice della società sande, il potere collettivo dell'associazione e l'ideale della bellezza femminile. Le maschere rappresentano anche gli spiriti delle acque attratti dalla forma dell'elmo e in questo caso le pieghe del collo rimandano alll'incresparsi delle acque da cui emergono. |
