Summary

[edit]
Description

Even on an overcast day, the Red-headed woodpecker is radiant. This is the least common woodpecker in our area, unique among woodpeckers for their fastidious methods of storing food; a few other species of woodpecker also store food, but none to such a complex degree, in cracks and knots, under or between shingles of bark. Insects caught on the wing are often stored alive, wedged in bark or a crevice too tight to escape!
