Summary[edit]

Description A mixture of sand and water is pump onto Rockaway Beach, Queens, New York, June 26, 2014, from an offshore borrow site. As the water runs off back into the ocean and the sand dries in the sun it lightens to the sandy color that people are more familiar with. The work is part of a $36.5 million coastline restoration project placing nearly 3.5 million cubic yards of sand repairing severe erosion from Hurricane Sandy and reducing coastal storm risks.
