Title |
Reverse of early Saxon wrist-clasp eye-plate. |
||
Description |
English: Catch-piece from an Early Anglo-Saxon wrist-clasp of Hines’s Form B12. It consists of a bar and projecting lugs only. There is a square plate at either end of the bar, each decorated with a very broad transverse groove flanked by transverse ridges. The ridges in their turn have transverse grooves, giving a ribbed effect. The square panels project slightly to the front, and to the rear extend into a flattened projecting lug which has a circular sewing hole. In the centre of the bar is a much longer rectangular panel, which projects a little further to the front than the square panels do. More than half of this, to the front, is filled with a flattened rectangular area which has a sub-rectangular perforation forming the catch. To the rear is another flattened projecting lug, with a circular sewing hole close to its rear edge. In between these panels, the bar is narrow; each section is decorated with three transverse mouldings. In very fresh condition, with many file marks visible on the reverse. 41 x 17mm. Late fifth or sixth century. |
