Title |
Reverse of zoomorphic brooch |
||
Description |
English: Copper alloy zoomorphic plate brooch. The brooch is very worn and is shown in profile to the right. The legs are missing, and the tail area and the perimeter of the head are very abraded. The body is decorated with a single curve towards the rear end representing the hip of the animal. The neck of the animal is very short and the head has a snout and worn ears. The animal would appear to be a hare, although the rear end of the animal would seem to be larger than normally portayed on hare brooches. The reverse of the brooch has an area reserved for the pin and catchplate, however the mechanism is fairly unusual. There is a raised moulded rectangle on which at the rear end of the animal there is a solid integral cube, and another smaller cube at the other end. The larger cube looks like an unfinished, unpierced lug for a hinged pin. There are file marks visible on the reverse indicating that the brooch had been partially worked on, however it is possible, given the general irregular look of the brooch and the unfinished pin mechanism, that it is a failed casting or an unfinished piece. |
