Metcalfe Held Varied Jobs. Had Business, Political, Newspaper Posts The long career of Richard Metcalfe. former Mayor of Omaha who died Wednesday, spanned four wars and the Korean conflict. And his activities ranged from newspaper man to politician to businessman. He was born October 11, 1861 in Upper Alton, Illinois. His father, a major and surgeon in the Seventh Illinois Regiment, was then fighting in the Civil War. His mother, Ellen Taswell Edwards, and his aunt, Matilda Ewards were friends of Mary Todd. And it was at the home of his grandfather, Ninian Edwards, that Abraham Lincoln met Mary Todd.
