Français : Richard a décidé de défendre la liberté des utilisateurs de l'informatique.
Pour ça il s'est engagé, à temps plein et bénévolement, dans la défense et le développement des logiciels libres (tout le monde à accès au codage, à la "recette de fabrication" et chacun peut recopier et/ou améliorer). Il a co-créé GNU/Linux, le premier système d'exploitation libre Il est à l'initiative du mouvement du logiciel libre Il a popularisé le terme anglais « copyleft » Il a développé de nombreux logiciels libres Il milite pour la gestion des droits numériques et contre les brevets logiciels L'idée : " Éliminer les logiciels pas libres pour les remplacer par des logiciels libres." En effet, pour Richard les programmes "non libres" sont des programmes privateurs : "les programmes privateurs sont pleins de fonctionnalités malveillantes comme d'espionner les utilisateurs, restreindre les utilisateurs (...) de censurer l'utilisateur." Résultat : 73 millions de personnes utilisent le système d'exploitation GNU/Linux. Richard a reçu une vingtaine de prix et distinctions au cours des 25 dernières années
