Rocky Mountain Elk are an elusive resident of Wind Cave National Park. Preferring the forested habitat of the park by day, they can sometimes be seen grazing the prairie from dusk until dawn. The eerie bugle of the bull elk is a trademark sound of dusk throughout September.
