Title |
Roman: Colchester Derivative (Polden Hill) Type Brooch |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth Part 3, Group 4.d, flat wing ends type) of the Roman period, circa AD 80-5 to AD 120..
Approximately 95% of the brooch is present, consisting of the head, bow, both wings, most of the spring, axis bar, catchplate and foot. The pin and the central section of the spring are missing, presumed lost in antiquity. In plan, the brooch is almost T-shaped, and D-shaped in cross section. The bow head is hump-like, and angular (comma shaped) in profile, with cylindral wings projecting from either side at the top. An incomplete rearward facing hook is present at the head of the bow, this still holds part of the spring. Four centrally positioned vertical grooves run down the top half of the bow. There is also some more decoration in the form of two diagonal grooves on each side edge of the bow. There is a vertical ridge next to the semi circular wing end caps and three humps on the edge of the bow just above where the wings meet the bow. The spring sits in the semi cylindrical groove behind the wings at the back of the brooch. The spring is copper alloy and is heavily corroded, which makes the coil difficult to see, there is probably an iron axis bar present in the cylindrical groove behind the wings aswell. The back of the brooch is undecorated save for a rectangular ridge running centrally down the back of the bow. This ridge culminates in the catch plate, this consists of a medium triangular plate with a folded outer edge to hold the pin, now missing. The foot consists of a ridged circular collar at the base of the bow with a spherical knop below that. The brooch measures 45.2 mm in length and is 19.8 mm wide. It has a thickness of 9.8 mm and weighs 14.7 g. The brooch is a dark green to brown in colour and has an even patina. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil may have resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail. Other examples of this type of brooch have been recorded on the database, including WMID-0514FE and WMID-AD27D3. |
