Title
Roman: Colchester Derivative (Polden Hill) Type Brooch
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4, flat wing ends type, ridge at centre of bow, column of bosses at each side), Mackreth 2011, 4.h. Plate 47, Roman date (AD 80 to AD 120).

Approximately 95% of the brooch is present, consisting of the head, bow, spring, wings and foot. Part of the catchplate and all of the pin are missing, presumably lost in antiquity.

In plan, the brooch is almost T-shaped, and D-shaped in cross section. The bow head is hump-like, and angular (comma shaped) in profile, with both sub-cylindral wings projecting from either side. The wings have sub circular pierced wing caps, which have a ridge at the end and a curved ridge where it connects to the bow. The reverse of the wings has a semi circular shaped depression where the spring is held. There appears to be an iron axis bar which holds the spring to the wings. On the bow on the front of the brooch the decoration takes the form of two adjacent central vertical ribs with a groove in between. Either side of these ribs, there are a series of raised pellets (16 on the left side of the brooch and 18 on the right side), these remain the same size all the way down the bow of the brooch. The bottom of the bow terminates in a knop, above which there is a ridged collar that tapers in then out to form a trapezoidal knop (or skirt), the base of which has two incised grooves etched into it. From this a smaller triangular knop protrudes from the centre. The catchplate emerges from above the upper collar on the reverse of the brooch, but is incomplete. The back of the brooch is undecorated, apart from a central rib running vertically down the brooch culminating in the sub-rectangular catch plate.

The brooch measures 43.8 mm in length and is 17.8 mm wide. It has a thickess of 6.1 mm and weighs 9.1 g.

The brooch is a mid grey colour, with an uneven patina, traces of silvering or tinning is evident on the reverse of the brooch. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.

Other examples of this style of brooch can be found on the database, including: WMID-4D9433 and WMID-4DFDB3.
