Title |
Roman: Bi-Convex glass bead |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete mid-blue glass bead of Roman date (50-200 AD). The bead is irregular in plan and a worn bi-convex shape in cross section. It has been worn and abraded in the ploughsoil and so is now irregular in plan. The hole through the centre of the bead is relatively regular and centrally positioned; it has a diameter of 1.4mm. The outer edge of the bead is decorated with a repeating pattern of curvi-linear zig-zag lines (conjoined U shapes) which have been worn away in places. The matrix of the glass shows frequent small rounded and elongated (oval) bubbles. The fragment measures 11.3mm diameter and is 5.2mm thick. It weighs 0.58 grams.
The exact function for these beads is somewhat elusive. The smaller beads were probably used in a similar manner to other (modern) beads as a form of personal adornment, although the larger faience and glass melon beads may have been impractical to wear, particularly around the neck. |
