Title
Roman Samian Ware Vessel
Description
English: A decorated body sherd of Samian ware pottery of early Roman date. The fabric is an oxidised orange with an orange brown slip. It contains mica and sparse very small white and black inclusions and was probably produced at a Central Gaulish workshop. The motif is a seated man, presumably Apollo, who is playing a lyre. A similar motif is reproduced in Oswald's 'Index of Figure Types on Terra Sigillata' (1937, p. 21, plate VI, no. 83). This appears at Lezoux on Dragondorff type 30 and 37 bowls. The curvature of this example indicates that it is from a form 37 bowl.
