Title
Roman Samian ware pottery
Description
English: Sherd of Roman Samian ware, probably dating to the 1st century and likely to be a Southern Gaulish product. The fragment depicts a frieze with two gladiators standing and fighting, both with a weapon and shield. A very similar parallel to this decoration can be seen on a Dr Form 30 bowl in Oswald & Pryce, 1920 ‘An Introduction to the study of Terra Sigullata’. This sherd appears to be quite curved in section and may be from a Dr Form 37 bowl. The piece weighs 22.68g and measures 48mm in width, 53mm in length and 9mm in thickness.
