Title
Roman Trumpet Brooch
Description
English: A fragment of a cast copper-alloy Roman brooch of Trumpet type, dating to the second century AD. Only the bottom half of the bow, most of the lower part of the catchplate and an elaborate foot knop are still present. The remains of the brooch body are decorated with a moulded raised spine running the vertical length of the centre of the brooch, flanked on either side with deep grooves, creating a sub-triangular cross-section. The brooch body tapers to a discoidal foot knop, decorated with a discoidal collar, followed by four protruding decorative pellets, creating a decorative band and then ending in the discoidal foot knop itself. The catchplate to the reverse is broken on the outer edge, but seems to be unperforated and sub-triangular in profile. The brooch has a medium green patina with reddish-brown patches and remains of the soil still clinging to recessed areas. It measures 27.22 mm long, 4.58 mm wide, 4.38 mm thick and weighs 4.9 grams.
