Title
Roman Window Glass fragment
Description
English: White [i.e. colourless] translucent bubble glass with a greenish tint and slight iridescence mainly on one side, possibly window glass. A thin [1.7mm] flat form with one straight made edge which is slightly curled or lipped during its manufacture might suggest this to be from a small pane from a window. The good condition tends to argue against a medieval date as the 'forest glass' of that period usually deteriorates to a darkened crumbly friable texture whereas this is solid, probably a soda glass made to a Roman recipe. Evidence for glazing at any period before the later post-medieval period is very rare amongst reported field finds. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410.
