Title
Roman Zoomorphic Brooch
Description
English: A cast copper alloy and enamel zoomorphic brooch of Roman date. The incomplete three-dimensional cockerel brooch measures 31.3mm by 24.9mm by 25.2mm and weighs 8.4g. The cockerel's body is hollow and oval. Its flat head and tail feathers project upwards from the body. The body itself is decorated with panels of blue and orange enamel, much of which survives in situ. These are intended to represent the feathers of the wings. On the back is the hinge and small curving catchplate. The pin is missing. A similar brooch from Ipswich, Suffolk, features in Hattatt's 'Visual Catalogue' (2000, p. 360, fig. 219, no. 167).
