Title |
Roman Zoomorphic Brooch |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper-alloy zoomorphic plate brooch in the form of a bird, possibly a dove, of Roman date. The solid three-dimensional bird is in flight with integral flat wings outstretched to the sides, and angled slightly upwards, with pointed tips (one missing). The bird has a short neck, small rounded head and small conical beak (tip missing). The body of the bird is semi-cylindrical in shape and notably large and long in contrast to the head; at the end of the body the integrally cast tail is formed of a stepped flat plate which is slightly fanned at the sides. The remains of the hinged pin fitting and catchplate are still evident on the underside of the bird's body, the pin is missing. Traces of a white-metal coating, probably tinning rather than silvering, are evident in patches on the body of the bird; the brooch is otherwise undecorated. Dated AD. c.100-200. |
