Title
Roman Zoomorphic Brooch
Description
English: An incomplete Roman copper-alloy and enamel zoomorphic plate brooch in the form of a fish viewed in profile. The brooch is a flat pointed oval in shape with the tail and fins now broken off and missing. The front of the brooch carries a recessed design outlining stylized details of a fish such as the eye, gill and scales. Traces of blue enamel can be seen in the circular recess around the eye and traces of red enamel in the crescent recess for the gill and also along the top and bottom of the body of the fish flanking a chevron pattern representing scales inbetween. The squashed remains of the catchplate for the pin fitting are present on the reverse.

Dated to the second century AD c.100-200.

For a parallel example see Hattatt, R., 'A Visual Catalogue of Richard Hattatt's Ancient Brooches'. 1989, p.362, fig.221, no.1198.
