Title
Roman Zoomorphic Plate Brooch
Description
English: A cast copper alloy Roman plate brooch dating from the second century. The plate is rectangular and has a plain border enclosing the central design which depicts a hare. Some of the surface of the hare is degraded. The metal on the front of the plate has been silvered, whilst the back has not. The area surrounding the hare is filled with dark blue enamel, most of which survives. On the reverse of the plate is a copper alloy axis bar between two pin lugs, around which is wound the spring of the pin of which only the stump survives. The catchplate is complete except for the turnover. There is a slight green patina on the coiled pin. For similar examples see SWYOR-E06628 or SWYOR-788BE1.
