Title
Roman Zoomorphic brooch
Description
English: A copper-alloy zoomorphic brooch in the shape of a swimming duck dating to the Roman period, c. AD 100 to 200.

The body of the duck is a concave tear drop shaped plate with the pin and catch plate both missing from the reverse. The front of the brooch has three lines of cells running the length of the body. All of the cells are crescent shaped and are filled with enamel in yellow, red and blue. The head of the duck is integrally cast and arches upwards before curving back down and tapering to form a beak shape.

Similar examples are listed in Hattatt (2000: 360) numbers 1165, 621 and 169.
